Blade Runner 2099 showrunner says the events of Blade Runner 2049 are “not directly connected” to the Prime Video show

Although it occurs in the same universe, 50 years later, Blade Runner 2099 is not “explicitly linked” to Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049, and will not tackle the groundbreaking incidents of that film, as per showrunner Silka Luisa.
“No, [Blade Runner 2049] is not explicitly tied to the series,” Luisa informed SFX magazine, which highlights the Prime Video limited series on its latest cover. “An essential early guideline was that viewers could engage with the series without having seen the films, ensuring it could exist independently.”
A brief reminder: Blade Runner 2049 featured Ryan Gosling as the Replicant K, who uncovers something remarkable during the film: that Harrison Ford’s Deckard (whose Replicant status is debated) and Sean Young’s Rachael had a daughter, Ana Stelline. This makes Ana the first child born to a Replicant, a reality that would undeniably have a significant influence on the cyberpunk landscape.
However, Blade Runner 2099 is taking a distinct path, narrating a story in the wake of a Replicant rebellion that places the engineered beings in control, relegating humans to a secondary status. Michelle Yeoh portrays Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner approaching the twilight of her life, while Hunter Schaefer depicts Cora, a human masquerading as a Replicant.
“This could serve as an entry point into the world of Blade Runner, and it wouldn’t rely on whether you have viewed 2049, [or] the original Blade Runner,” Luisa continues. “In that respect, we had to separate ourselves from the storyline.”
It makes logical sense that 2099 is not merely addressing the aftermath of 2049 – half a century is a considerable duration, and many changes will have occurred. Furthermore, it doesn’t negate the possibility that the events of Blade Runner 2049 could have profoundly shifted historical trajectories. Perhaps it was the miracle of Ana Stelline that ultimately incited the Replicant rebellion.
