Yacht Club Games has verified that the majority of its developers are presently engaged in a completely new 3D project (possibly Shovel Knight 3D), following the success of the acclaimed Mina the Hollower, which allowed the team to proceed.
Prior to releasing its retro adventure game earlier this year, Yacht Club referred to Mina the Hollower as a “make-or-break” moment for the cherished indie developer. A worldwide health crisis and a lacking attempt to transform Yacht Club into a multi-project studio had seemingly left the developer in a precarious position.
However, Mina the Hollower performed well enough to secure additional time for the studio, according to a recent Reddit AMA packed with intriguing insights. When questioned if Mina could provide financial security for the business, Sean Velasco simply responded “yes… for now!” Mina succeeded in selling over 500,000 copies within its first fortnight, thus progressing towards the million copies the developers once aimed for.
In the near future, the developers aren’t prepared to discuss the types of DLC, spin-offs, and sequels that the beloved Shovel Knight enjoyed for an extended period, but they aren’t forsaking their newest creation either. “We’re developing more post-launch features,” the developers expressed, which encompass “enhanced randomizer options, enemy and boss randomization, additional modifiers, speedrunner functionalities” and more ways “to do even more in Mina.”
Another enthusiast also inquired with the Yacht Club team about their unannounced 3D Shovel Knight game – Velasco had earlier mentioned to Bloomberg that the project was halfway completed before the entire studio refocused all efforts on Mina, reverting back to a one-game organization. Alec Faulkner fell short of confirming Shovel Knight 3D, but mentioned, “most of us are currently engaged in a 3D game, yes!” Okay then, Alec, hold on to your secrets. “Not saying more! Other than that it’s gonna be soooooooo incredible.”
Co-founder Nick Wozniac delved deeper into the condition of the developer,
