Ghost of Yōtei creator Sucker Punch Productions has apparently faced layoffs, impacting 24 staff members.
As per an internal communication acquired by Aftermath, the developer “opted to implement some workforce reductions” after “carefully analyzing the obstacles in the market and evaluating the team’s requirements for [its] upcoming project.”
One former staff member asserted that 24 individuals were dismissed.
“We understand this is a considerable amount to absorb, and we want to reassure you that we did not arrive at this conclusion easily,” the communication expressed.
“We have devoted significant attention to this matter and have strived to assist our impacted colleagues during this transition period as much as we can […] There’s no escaping the fact that this is a challenging day. Next week, we will provide further specifics about the future.”
GamesIndustry.biz has contacted Sony Interactive Entertainment for a response.
Sucker Punch’s latest release, Ghost of Yōtei, is the follow-up to 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima. Yōtei was launched last October, selling 3.3 million units in its initial month and exceeding Tsushima’s sales within the same timeframe.
According to GSD statistics, Yōtei was Sony’s biggest first-party PlayStation debut in Europe. It “made a notable contribution” to Sony’s Q3 outcomes, with digital game and additional content revenue rising 6% to $4.8 billion.
Sucker Punch has continued to release content for Yōtei, including a multiplayer feature in March and a complete edition with a single-player narrative expansion launched earlier this month.
