In addition to what is undoubtedly the most impressive collection of lifetime accomplishments, Shigeru Miyamoto is poised to receive the esteemed Order of Culture award next month.
This accolade, which originated in the 1930s, will be bestowed by the Emperor of Japan on the nation’s Culture Day (3rd November), recognizing individuals who’ve excelled in enhancing Japan’s art, literature, technology or science domains.
In essence, it’s quite significant. Its importance is amplified by the fact that Miyamoto will be the first figure from the gaming sector to ever achieve such honors.
During a press briefing yesterday (reported by Japanese news source Denfaminico Gamer), Miyamoto admitted he felt “a bit shy” about receiving the award, emphasizing that “Games aren’t crafted by one person; they stem from collaboration with numerous individuals. I embrace this award with the understanding that it symbolizes that” (translated via machine). Truly, the humility of this individual!
That said, he appeared delighted that the award recognizes games as a cultural medium. “I aspire to keep creating experiences that are always central to the living room,” he expressed.
It’s hard to emphasize enough how pivotal Miyamoto’s contributions have been in our existence (and in the lives of those reading this, we bet), so this distinguished award feels entirely justified. Congratulations, Miyamoto-san!
