Yesterday, it was disclosed that EA would be closing down the RPG creator BioWare and halting “preliminary development” on its upcoming Mass Effect venture.
Now, in a recent update, a gameplay trailer for this title has seemingly appeared online, with Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier verifying it’s the “genuine” article. It appears BioWare was supposedly engaged in it right up until “its shutdown”:
Jason Schreier: “Can confirm that this is an authentic trailer of the Mass Effect title that BioWare was developing right until its closure yesterday.”
This footage displays a full scene, blending in-engine visuals with some familiar characters and over-the-shoulder gameplay moments. It concludes with the official title ‘Mass Effect Universe’ and a notification indicating it is “arriving soon”.
Although it’s unclear who precisely leaked this footage, a Reddit user claiming to be an EA employee asserts that a trailer was prepared for the upcoming major installment of Mass Effect.
According to a report by Schreier, BioWare’s shutdown is part of EA’s latest budget-reduction efforts, which will result in the elimination of approximately 400 jobs (which includes around 50 positions at BioWare).
The most recent significant Mass Effect installment that was launched was Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017, which followed the Mass Effect trilogy centered around Commander Sheppard. Mass Effect 3 was made available on the Wii U in 2012.
What are your feelings regarding the closure of BioWare? Do you have hopes of seeing the Mass Effect saga return someday? Share your thoughts in the comments.
