Feature: Song Of Time
In a week’s time, we will finally have the opportunity to experience The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time once more.
Although the Switch 2 edition signifies the second time Nintendo has introduced a remake on distinct hardware, the N64 classic has been featured on every Nintendo home console since, along with a few others as well.
The frequency of re-releases is hardly astonishing considering the game’s prestige as The Citizen Kane of Video Games™ and more, but reflecting back, it has made us contemplate just how many renditions of OoT we possess.
Thus, while we all anxiously await our return to that Hyrule, let us reminisce about all the prior Ocarina of Times we’ve purchased since ’98…
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time N64
To start, it’s the Alpha, the Omega, the original Nintendo 64 edition.
Debuting on November 21 in Japan, two days later in North America, and almost three weeks later in Europe (on December 11), some players received shiny gold carts while others had to settle for the standard grey, but all featured the same remarkable game.
Well, nearly identical. Nintendo released several updates addressing various concerns, from the notorious chanting in the Fire Temple to Ganondorf’s blood, along with minor text modifications and more.
The wonderful individuals at The Cutting Room Floor have provided an excellent summary of the differences among revisions, including side-by-side comparisons of any modified text. We highly recommend a visit if these intricate details pique your interest as much as they do ours!
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time / Master Quest GCN
On the following console, Ocarina received not just one but two distinct re-releases on GameCube, paired with an additional version that fans had been eager to explore.
The initial GameCube version was offered as a pre-order incentive when purchasing The Wind Waker.
