Modern Warfare 4 Sparks Widespread Debate About Lack Of Reviews For Some Xbox Games
Update [Wed 28th Oct 2026, 12:10pm]: Xbox has subsequently addressed this, as noted elsewhere on Pure Xbox:
Original Story: In recent times, we’ve intermittently heard individuals discussing the overall scarcity of reviews for Xbox launches on platforms like Metacritic – it’s a common phenomenon that PC and PS5 titles receive the majority of critiques.
This situation has been intensified today by the circumstances surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which currently holds only 2 professional assessments for Xbox, while boasting over 30 for PS5 and PC.
It even resulted in the official Call of Duty account including Xbox in its promotional material:
From what we gather, Xbox codes were not distributed in advance for the Xbox version in most instances. This has been referenced by several individuals on social media, including Windows Central’s Jez Corden:
We also tried to secure an Xbox code for Modern Warfare 4 before its launch, but regrettably could not acquire one (Xbox’s PR team is generally exceptional at providing review access well in advance for first-party titles like Gears of War: E-Day and Halo: Campaign Evolved, although Call of Duty is typically managed by a different team).
If feasible, we will still deliver a post-launch review soon – stay tuned regarding that.
Nonetheless, it’s not an ideal scenario for a major title to receive such a limited number of professional evaluations on Xbox, and MW4 is certainly not the sole instance of a situation like this, yet it’s the most prominent due to being an actual first-party Xbox release.
Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet did recognize a query about this recently, so perhaps it’s on the agenda to be addressed:
Who knows, maybe the Xbox Series S is contributing to complications in certain situations regarding reviews?
