Sony’s struggle against PS5 jailbreaks is inciting a new wave of backlash, as it necessitates players to upgrade their firmware to access specific games.
The Japanese behemoth – already precariously situated online due to its choice to halt disc production – has been issuing updates more frequently, in response to hacks that have compromised its console.
Some newer physical titles mandate the latest firmware version for gameplay, drawing criticism from various sections of social media.

In the wake of the company’s decision to stop producing physical discs in 2028, some individuals perceive this as Sony imposing further limits on players.
However, this has been standard across almost all consoles dating back to the PS3 generation. Typically, discs enable you to install the necessary update directly from the Blu-ray, or it can also be fetched from PlayStation’s site if you prefer not to connect your console to the Internet.
Despite this being a common procedure for more than a decade, Sony’s strategy to tackle these jailbreaks is igniting severe backlash on social media.
“And Sony continues to ponder why people dislike them now,” one user commented on X (or Twitter).
“We do not despise this company enough,” another remarked.
This is merely an extension of the conversation that’s been ongoing throughout the year, which has seen Sony targeted for many of its choices online. To date, it doesn’t seem to be impacting the company’s ability to sell consoles.
