With WoW: Forever, Blizzard promises “our aim in class design is not perfect numerical equality”

As World of Warcraft: Forever approaches its significant launch tomorrow, Blizzard persists in refining the new MMO offshoot to respond to the increasing feedback from the Beta – especially regarding classes and their identities.

World of Warcraft has consistently excelled at ensuring each class feels distinct and contributes something that others do not. This is a hallmark of an excellent MMO, and Forever will be no exception to this rule.

In the most recent compilation of Beta development notes from Blizzard, the creators clarify that “trying to adhere roughly to Classic power budgets for each class” has proved challenging.

Every new component arrived “at the cost of another,” leading to “some iconic abilities feeling unimpressive, while limiting other potentially thrilling design avenues. Over the past fortnight, we have amplified damage across classes game-wide and have escalated the health of higher-level creatures to balance things out. This extra ‘headroom’ has empowered us to adjust elements to a place we hope feels more satisfactory overall.”

As for this latest set of adjustments, it “mirrors areas where we may have rushed into using Burning Crusade – or Wrath-era tactics instead of developing new solutions that align more fittingly with the Forever combat framework. Our goal in class design isn’t perfect numeric uniformity, but rather for every class to feel vital within their groups, creating powerful, memorable experiences through mastering them.”

In Forever, in particular, “this is achieved by emphasizing the strengths and variations that render each class distinctive, instead of unnecessarily homogenizing them.”

Blizzard outlines some of this “emphasis,” so to speak, explaining modifications to everything from the Druid (enhancements and new passives, hooray) to the rogue. There’s a great deal, and that’s putting it mildly, so I would advise checking them all out to discover how your class will be transformed.
