Bethesda immediately brings our Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel hopes back down to earth
Bethesda has officially named the forthcoming installment in its enduring fantasy RPG franchise The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel. This represents our first substantial piece of information regarding the game since the initial brief teaser trailer the studio revealed in 2018, but temper your expectations: despite the series’ 40th anniversary, this does not imply that Sentinel’s launch is forthcoming.
“Thank you for 40 years of collective experiences,” Bethesda expresses in a social media announcement. “We are eager to create even more together with The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Development is ongoing, and while it may be a while before we’re prepared to disclose additional details, it feels fantastic to finally share the title and setting with you.”
On Bluesky, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier is reiterating his earlier claim that the title is “over 2 years away,” and Bethesda’s message certainly does not suggest it is any nearer. We are aware that Sentinel is playable in some capacity, at least, as Xbox chief Asha Sharma recently boasted about a “live demonstration” that showcased “remarkable” scale and an “even more impressive” narrative.
Bethesda has been one of several studios impacted by Xbox’s ongoing significant layoffs, and the developers who remain anticipate that the cuts will “have a significant and sweeping impact on the game,” which may result in additional delays. I suppose Microsoft and Bethesda might argue that it’s not possible to delay a game that never had a public launch date, but The Elder Scrolls 6 is already beginning to be mentioned in the same context as Duke Nukem Forever and Beyond Good & Evil 2.
I hope Sentinel transcends those types of comparisons, but Bethesda has a lot to demonstrate after Starfield left many of the studio’s long-term admirers feeling let down. Letting go of experienced developers certainly won’t simplify meeting those expectations.
