Roblox growth slumps, but the company is betting big on AI to compensate
Roblox disclosed its quarterly financial outcomes yesterday and the figures are somewhat inconsistent. Although the firm significantly fell short of the daily active user targets and projections, management is optimistic that generative AI will serve as the remedy that compensates for the reduction in users.
In spite of popular games like You Can Steal an Egg causing a stir on Roblox over the last quarter, daily active users decreased by 9 percent compared to the previous year, coming in well under the 145 million forecast at just 138 million. The company did surpass forecasts in hours engaged at 34 billion, yet that still signifies a 15 percent drop from the prior year. According to the financial release, Roblox attributed this decrease to the last year showing robust growth.
Nonetheless, the company plans to counter this diminished demand by significantly investing in generative AI game development initiatives. Roblox claims that over 80% of the platform’s top 100 games from the last quarter were developed using AI tools.

Roblox’s AI training approach received attention earlier this week after the company assured Game Developer that an AI agent had collected 145.5 GB of 3D assets, including adult-themed material, from Open3DLab. A Roblox representative described this as an error, stating that the content would not be employed for AI training in the future.
Founder and CEO David Baszucki remained optimistic about AI in his remarks to investors. “AI is fundamentally transforming the gaming sector, facilitating a significant change in the speed at which content can be generated,” he remarked.
