Phantom Blade Zero is asking players to free up 300GB of space for pre-loading, double its actual 145GB file size

Pre-downloads are now available for Phantom Blade Zero, the inaugural action title from the Chinese studio S-Game. Alongside the announcement of the pre-download, the developer disclosed the final set of PC specifications, including the amount of space the game will require on your hard drive.
Once set up, Phantom Blade Zero will use a hefty 145GB of your valuable storage. However, to pre-download the game, you’ll need more than twice that – 300GB, ostensibly for the decryption and decompression phases. The developer clarified in a Steam blog entry that “temporary files and the complete game files need to exist simultaneously during the unlock procedure”. You’ll reclaim the additional space once the game is fully installed, naturally.
Although a game demanding extra storage for such manipulations is not unusual, the fact that Phantom Blade Zero’s install size is already quite substantial makes freeing up double that outrageous. Phantom Blade Zero also necessitates an SSD, and given the worldwide gen-AI-driven shortages in memory and storage have rendered them unreachable for many, you’re unlikely to purchase a new drive solely to support a single game.
As high as these storage requirements may appear, they are not expected to dissuade gamers from acquiring a copy. In fact, the game is already forecasted to be one of the year’s major successes, having reportedly sold over 500,000 units on Steam alone, according to various estimates.
Eurogamer assessed Phantom Blade Zero. In her review, Emma Kent criticized the game’s lackluster boss battles and its overall absence of refinement, which she indicated detracts from Phantom Blade Zero’s otherwise fluid and cinematic kung fu-style gameplay.
Phantom Blade Zero is set to launch on 29th October for PC and PS5.
