As a journalist, it’s crucial for me to observe PlayStation’s ongoing PR turmoil from a completely impartial viewpoint – this way I can inform you all about the developments with minimal input from my own individual beliefs. However, for a corporation like Nintendo, which clearly regards Sony as one of its principal adversaries, you likely wish to keep an eye on what has transpired following PlayStation’s declaration that production of physical discs is concluding in 2028 with a much more tactical lens. Nintendo has always been remarkably steadfast, intentional, and methodical in its communications, with a former marketing lead indicating that the company is strategically altering its public stance on physical media in direct reaction to Sony’s present crisis.
Within this very particular framework, Nintendo is already in an advantageous PR scenario simply by launching a console in 2025 that completely accommodates physical titles without a digital-only option, while both contemporary PlayStation and Xbox console offerings include variants without disks. Former Nintendo marketing lead Kit Ellis highlights this in a recent YouTube brief where he examines the carefully chosen words of his past colleague, Bill van Zyll, who is currently overseeing Nintendo’s operations in Latin America. Van Zyll recently declared Nintendo has “no intentions of renouncing physical media” because “we are aware of how much fans treasure it,” and Ellis believes this was part of Nintendo’s plan to leverage the entire PlayStation fiasco.
“This is certainly not Bill speaking impulsively,” Ellis states. “This is the pre-approved Nintendo messaging that everyone involved in interviews is drilled on, and they must articulate it. Firstly, this stands out to me as communication that was evidently revised recently following all of Sony’s complications as they shift away from physical gaming.
“Specifically, the assertion that ‘we understand the fans appreciate them’ is a statement that, when articulated, positions you as having a superior solution compared to your rivals.”
