The 2D-focused engine GameMaker is set to make its “next-generation runtime” GMRT available for commercial use at no cost starting January 1, 2027.
From that day forward, developers will be able to create and distribute games for desktop, mobile, web, and GX Games without any charge.
GameMaker clarified that “the simplified licensing framework will allow developers to create and commercially release their games using GMRT without needing to acquire a professional license,” along with “source code access across all tiers.” The company assured that tier pricing will remain unchanged.
Individuals holding a professional license “will continue to have the ability to commercially release games developed on the current GMS2 runtime” with the additional advantage of accessing the GMS2 runtime source code.
GameMaker highlighted that “regardless of the runtime, developers will still require an enterprise license and must be approved developers to export to consoles.”
This announcement follows adjustments to source code access for GMRT made earlier this year and aligns with GameMaker’s mission to enhance the accessibility of indie game development.
“From the outset, GameMaker has focused on making game development more available and adaptable for each creator out there,” remarked Russell Kay, Head of GameMaker.
“As GMRT continues to launch in beta across various platforms, we are broadening the range of what we offer to developers. We look forward to seeing the innovations the community will produce as we enter this new phase for GameMaker.”
