Activision has much at stake with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The previous installment, Black Ops 7, faced a tepid reception from critics and gamers alike, and external tracking data indicated the game significantly underperformed when compared to other titles in the franchise.

Initial evaluations imply that Infinity Ward has regained the franchise’s momentum with MW4, which currently boasts a generally positive Metacritic rating of 84 and has been acclaimed as a return to excellence.

IGN‘s Simon Cardy remarked that Infinity Ward has “managed this challenge effectively” in his ongoing review of the game’s narrative campaign, yielding “a genuinely thrilling sequence of missions that shine when they concentrate on what is innovative, rather than getting mired in the past.”

Game Informer‘s Michael Murphy, who rated it 8.5/10, concurred: “MW4 emerges at a pivotal moment for the franchise, largely due to the inconsistent caliber of recent releases. With a precarious predecessor, Infinity Ward had much to mend and resolve, especially with 4 destined to conclude the revamped Modern Warfare series.”

MW4 is also the first CoD to debut on a Nintendo platform since 2013, and Nintendo Life‘s Gavin Lane stated the game does not disappoint in his 9/10 critique, describing it as “remarkable”.

Story campaign

MW4’s narrative continues from its 2023 predecessor, this time focusing on a fictional invasion of South Korea by North Korea.

The Guardian‘s Keith Stuart characterizes MW4’s plot as “a grand, thrilling airport novel of a game, packed with classic CoD moments, featuring but not limited to parkour over Manhattan rooftops,
