id Software co-founder John Romero indicates that his studio’s shelved Xbox project has a new distributor, with a reduced team revising the game’s scope.
Romero Games revealed their development on an “entirely new FPS with a unique, original IP” back in 2022. However, during the summer of 2025, following what has become an annual layoffs at Xbox, the venture was seemingly terminated. Concerning the original objectives, he states, “We can’t bring that game to completion. That game is unattainable because it requires 110 personnel. So this represents a thorough redesign of an entirely different game, but it incorporates much of the effort we invested in the previous games.”
Nonetheless, Romero mentions “we’ve transferred a multitude of elements to the new game, which has provided us with a significant head-start, beginning with stunning art, fantastic weapons, and all that sort of material.” Regarding the new publisher,
