An ex-volunteer is posing legal threats against Skyblivion, the enduring fan recreation of Oblivion created in Skyrim’s engine, regarding the code they contributed to the initiative.
The unofficial initiative, which reimagines 2006’s The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, is being assembled by volunteers from the TES Renewal Project, the modding collective that also works on the Morrowind remake Skywind.
Bethesda has permitted the endeavor to persist with the stipulation that it substitutes all of the original game’s assets, and the team has continued to progress after Bethesda unveiled its own Oblivion Remastered in April 2025.
In a message published on Twitter/X on 30th October, the Skyblivion crew stated that following the volunteer’s departure, both parties were at odds over the “ongoing usage and upkeep” of their contributions.
The primary concern was the group’s decompilation of segments of that code, which it claimed was essential “to preserve functionality and resolve issues” after its entry to the original source code repository was withdrawn.
As per the team, the volunteer subsequently “intensified by issuing legal threats”, including requests for the actual names and home addresses of its volunteer team leaders. The team indicated that this was “something we couldn’t tolerate and believe is excessive”.
The group mentioned it has sought legal advice and is “fully assured in our entitlement to retain the code they provided”. Nevertheless, it stated it removed the code “to shield our volunteers from unnecessary pressure and ensure a clean separation”, reconstructing that system from the ground up.
Regardless, it asserts that the threats have persisted. Its announcement indicates the former volunteer is “attempting to sue”, but it remains uncertain whether any lawsuit has genuinely been initiated. The volunteer has not been identified.
“Please don’t turn this into a witch-hunt,” the team implored fans, expressing that it wishes the former volunteer “all the best” and aspires to “resolve this swiftly and proceed with our anticipated release of Skyblivion”.
Last December, the team postponed Skyblivion from 2025 to 2026.
