It was initially revealed back in 2012!
During the summer of 2022, we spotlighted an impending Xbox Game Pass title named Routine here at Pure Xbox – and after three years, the developers have finally offered a substantial update on its development.
Taking to Steam, they recognized it’s been a considerable period since the last update, and the game remains “very much in active progress”. Nonetheless, they wish to avoid committing to a release timeframe until they are entirely confident about it.
“In summary, ROUTINE is still very much in active progress, and we are slowly nearing the completion of the game. We’ve gained valuable insights from our previous experiences, one being not to declare a release timeframe until we are absolutely sure we can meet it. However, we’re optimistic that we’ll be able to share more updates on that front shortly.”
Routine was initially conceived all the way back in 2012, encountering various development hurdles along the journey. Its 2022 re-reveal brought the news that DOOM composer Mick Gordon was contributing to the soundtrack, although he has since departed the project due to scheduling conflicts.
Regardless, a significant portion of Gordon’s creations will reportedly feature in the final version:
“We are still a core development team of three, but we have been fortunate enough to receive support and expertise from additional contributors throughout the game’s development. We are immensely grateful to have collaborated with a diverse array of talented individuals over the years! One of those individuals we appreciate and feel privileged to have worked with is Mick Gordon.
Mick dedicated many years to working on ROUTINE. However, in July 2024, Mick made the tough choice to exit the project due to scheduling issues. During his time with us, Mick produced numerous impressive audio assets that will be included in the final game and provided invaluable audio guidance for ROUTINE. These contributions will now be executed by a new audio designer and team.”
So, that’s the latest information we have! The team didn’t mention anything regarding release platforms in this development update, but Routine has already been confirmed for Xbox Game Pass, and we hope it’s not too far off.
When it does eventually release, it sounds like we’re in for a blend of Alien: Isolation and Deliver Us The Moon – an “engaging and atmospheric experience” set within an abandoned lunar base with an adversary who perceives you as their primary threat.
Needless to say, we’ll be keeping a vigilant eye on this title – hopefully, we’ll receive some release date updates later this year.
“ROUTINE is a First Person Sci-Fi Horror title set in an abandoned Lunar base envisioned through an 80’s lens of the future. Curious exploration transitions into a necessity for survival when a lunar base falls utterly silent. The search for answers brings you face to face with an enemy who believes you are the main danger. Discoveries lead to deeper uncertainties, and the only direction to take is forward.”
