Update: Studio states it has been approached by various publishers

Update []: In recent developments, Romero Games has issued a new statement via social media asserting that the studio remains open and the team is actively deliberating future actions, with “multiple publishers” allegedly having made contact in recent days. Here’s a comprehensive look at the statement:

Original Story: Last week, we disclosed that Romero Games had become entangled in the Xbox layoffs – their upcoming AAA title, directed by John Romero, the creator of the DOOM series, seemingly had its financing withdrawn by Microsoft.

In the meantime, a conversation with an unidentified Romero Games employee has gained traction – primarily due to their claim that Microsoft communicated with the studio a day before retracting funding and said nothing about it.

“We had discussions with the publisher the day prior to this occurrence, there was no indication.”

Now, we won’t dwell on that too extensively because it reflects just one employee’s perspective — who can say if higher management was aware or not — but it’s evident that at least a portion of the team was utterly blindsided by the announcement. For what it’s worth, Romero Games’ statement from the previous week emphasized that it was beyond their “visibility or control”.

The staff member affirms the studio is now “entirely closed” for the time being, but they are “endeavoring to secure alternative funding for the project”. There remains hope for it – but everything is currently paused – and might be entirely scrapped.

“We’re attempting to explore other avenues for funding the project. But for now, it’s entirely shut down, and the studio is also closed.”

We don’t have substantial information regarding the game itself, but with John and Brenda Romero leading the charge, it’s something we are certainly eager to learn about. Let’s hope it can secure funding elsewhere in the upcoming weeks.
