The Witcher 4 narrative lead says CD Projekt Red “can’t break” the stuff that people want from a Witcher game: “We have to do that”

The Witcher 4‘s narrative director Philipp Weber has indicated that the forthcoming sequel is adopting insights gleaned from CD Projekt Red‘s previous titles, asserting that the developer “cannot compromise” on aspects that are already successful.

In a conversation with GamesRadar+, Weber mentioned that the team is implementing “most of the valuable insights we acquired from The Witcher 3” while developing The Witcher 4. Certainly, the developers aspire to create “new experiences, exciting features, ambitious endeavors, innovative elements” – yet they remain acutely aware of what rendered The Witcher 3 appealing in the first place.

“Furthermore, we understand the elements that made The Witcher 3 successful, which we aimed to incorporate into The Witcher 3, and we must ensure that we emphasize those,” he elaborated. “We can’t compromise on that. The aspects we desire from a Witcher title, which players expect from a Witcher title, must remain intact. We need to deliver on that.”

“Many of the narrative principles from The Witcher 3 are applied in the same manner. Numerous guidelines on quest creation that we documented, for instance, for new team members joining The Witcher 4, originate from The Witcher 3. Occasionally, we introduce new concepts for fresh features, yet the fundamental principles retain that same philosophy we aimed for.”

Weber recently reaffirmed this stance elsewhere, too, clarifying that the studio adheres to a stringent ‘no fetch quests’ philosophy that is set to remain unchanged in The Witcher 4. Moreover, he is holding onto wise counsel he received during his initial days at the esteemed RPG studio.

Do not assume The Witcher 4 will appear precisely as it did during its major showcase upon release, as CD Projekt is “not assuring that this will remain unchanged” in the complete RPG
