The Rings of Power season 3 advances the plot of the Lord of the Rings prequel five years into the future, commencing amid the conflict between Sauron and the Elves. This decision, according to the show’s creators, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, enables them to initiate the tale at a “tipping point”, a moment that will also be explored in subsequent seasons.
During a recent discussion with GamesRadar+, we inquired if this was a strategy they intend to repeat. “Absolutely, very much so,” McKay replies. “From the outset, we aimed for the show to condense the timeline present in the books, while also incorporating substantial leaps in time for characters to evolve, for realms to rise or decline, and I believe there might be additional jumps in store for the future.”
The initial concept when pitching the show was for it to span five seasons. Speculations regarding the development of a fourth season began circulating last year, although Amazon Studios has yet to verify this information.
With the third season, this decision enabled them to immerse the viewers directly into the story and maintain the momentum from the conclusion of season 2. “We really aimed to hit the ground running, and a brilliant method to achieve that is by placing the audience into a scenario where their prior knowledge is somewhat outdated and doesn’t assist them; they must keep pace with the show,” McKay elaborates.
“You know, ‘Oh my goodness, Barad-dûr is complete. Hold on, Rivendell has been established. Galadriel and Arondir are now friends and allies in battle? And over here, this situation is unfolding, and the Orcs are like this.'”
He adds: “We believed it could provide us with a genuine surge of energy to arrive in that manner.”

For the actors of the show, the time interval also allowed them to conceptualize where their characters would be positioned after the hiatus.
