A24 and Alex Garland’s Elden Ring film is reportedly the production company’s most costly project ever with an estimated budget of $200 million. FromSoftware’s RPG adaptation is not modestly priced.
The amount originates from a recent Wall Street Journal article indicating that A24 is investing “close to $200 million” to translate the groundbreaking dark fantasy title, excluding marketing expenditures, per reliable insiders. Earlier this year, the reported amount was around $100 million – still A24’s largest film at that moment.
A budget of $200 million would undeniably confirm Elden Ring as the studio’s most extravagant feature to date. For perspective, the arthouse firm supposedly allocated approximately $70 million for last year’s Marty Supreme, starring Timothee Chalamet, which was its previous most costly cinematic endeavor. Prior to that, Alex Garland’s Civil War had a financial mark of $50 million.
A24 is essentially wagering blockbuster funds on one of its first significant blockbuster ventures – at $200 million, the expenditure for adapting Elden Ring aligns more with the budgets typically associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, it’s not necessarily an extremely high-stakes gamble. Elden Ring stands out as one of the generation’s most beloved and iconic titles – analyst Rhys Elliott recently reported that the game of the year had sold over 36 million copies, generating upwards of $2 billion in revenue. There’s no assurance that the Elden Ring film can replicate the success of the game – it must first be well-made – but the brand recognition could significantly assist it in becoming a box office success.
The Elden Ring film is set to premiere in theaters on March 3, 2028. Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and Cailee Spaeny (Beef, Alien: Romulus) are featured in the fantasy film, which concluded shooting earlier this summer. George R.R. Martin is involved as a producer after assisting FromSoftware in developing the game’s mythology.
