A company that supported the Switch throughout its existence was the port expert Virtuos – developing titles such as Dark Souls and The Outer Worlds for the versatile device. Although this might be the dawn of the Switch 2’s journey, the same group is already expressing optimism about the new device’s prospects.

In a recent conversation with Wccftech, Eoin O’Grady – the chief technical officer of Virtuos’ branch Black Shamrock (Starlink: Battle for Atlas) – is confident that the Switch 2 will “outdo” the achievements of the initial platform.

He posits that the “expansion” in the portable gaming market currently (attributed to gadgets like the original Switch and Steam Deck) will contribute to the Switch 2’s triumph, as it can capitalize on this “increasing interest in gaming on the move” with a blend of “indie treasures”, “Nintendo exclusives”, and “now AAA blockbuster hits”.

“Nintendo boasts a vast base of devoted fans, but in addition, the handheld gaming market is expanding at this moment…thus, I believe we will see the Switch 2 exceed its forerunner.”

Virtuos’ North America director of business development, Alex Heise, reinforces this – emphasizing how the “solid brand” and “demonstrated success” of the first Switch system, with a “2” appended to the title, should clarify the value of the new gadget “instantly” when compared to certain other Nintendo systems from the past.

He remarks that although nobody likely “entirely anticipated” the Switch 2 would achieve the “fastest-selling console launch in history“, Virtuos maintained elevated expectations.

“The Switch 2 is the most incremental console Nintendo has introduced in quite some time, harking back to the shift from NES to SNES. No Nintendo console has ever featured a ‘2’ in its title.”

Nintendo has confirmed that its new hybrid device sold “over 3.5 million units globally” within the first four days of its release – also marking it as the “highest worldwide sales level for any Nintendo hardware” ever. As of March 31, 2025, the original Switch has now surpassed 152 million units sold globally over the course of eight years.

Other third-party creators expressing their backing for the Switch 2 involve firms such as CD Projekt Red (Cyberpunk 2077) and Capcom (Street Fighter 6).
