Square Enix has revealed that Dissidia Final Fantasy is making a comeback, albeit not in the manner many enthusiasts had wished.
Dissidia Final Fantasy initiated as a collection of combat games on the PSP featuring FF characters from all generations clashing, but the publisher Square Enix has subsequently applied the Dissidia label to nearly any title where its JRPG icons intersect, most recently with Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia in 2017, again on mobile.
Fast forward eight years, and Squeenix has played the identical card. A fresh website indicates that the “next advancement” for the series is arriving on mobile soon, with a broadcast scheduled for October 14th to unveil more specifics.
For the time being, we have only a shadowy outline of 10 characters. I can distinctly identify FF13’s Lightning, FF7’s Cloud, and FF15’s Prompto – it also appears that FF10’s Auron, FF9’s Zidane, and FF8’s Rinoa are included, though their obscured forms are a bit trickier to pinpoint.
Needless to say, supporters of the initial two fighting titles are not particularly happy, especially considering Square Enix’s troubled history with online mobile games, to phrase it mildly. Just earlier this year, the publisher terminated the Kingdom Hearts mobile offshoot after doing the same to Nier’s most underrated installment.
“I realize people dislike mobile and gachas but Opera Omnia was exceptionally good,” one Redditor responded. “I possess little confidence this will be anywhere close to as fine but I can fantasize.”
“Square, kindly, at least remaster Duodecim,” another remarked.
“I’d be thrilled if SE didn’t have a record of [end of service] in surprisingly rapid succession,” a third remarked.
In the meantime, reflect fondly on the finest Final Fantasy games of all time.
