Combat kicked off at NYCC this weekend as the ensemble of Mortal Kombat II graced the stage to energize fans for the subsequent installment in the bone-crunching, skull-smashing series. Johnny Cage, Kitana, Jade, and Shao Kahn—portrayed by Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford, respectively—made their entrance, sharing an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip of our protagonists facing off against the beloved, fang-bearing Baraka. Moreover, the cast and production team revealed that the anticipated sequel would not mark the final round in the recently overhauled franchise.

Accompanying the cast at the New York Comic-Con was screenwriter Jeremy Slater, who informed the audience that a third film was already in preliminary development. “Our associates at New Line and Warner Bros. are thrilled with this movie,” stated Slater. “They are so enthusiastic, they genuinely believe there’s a substantial fanbase eager for it, and they’ve already engaged me to begin scripting the next edition.”

What this new installment will encompass remains uncertain since the second movie hasn’t even premiered. Scheduled for release on May 15, 2026, Mortal Kombat II was initially slated for October 24, 2025, a shift that director Simon McQuoid assured fans was indeed a beneficial decision for the franchise moving ahead. Justifying the change in date, McQuoid expressed to the audience, “We’ve crafted a spectacular summer blockbuster. We should take pride in the fact that Mortal Kombat as the film and the brand is going to kick off summer next year. Yes, we must wait, but it’s going to be monumental. That’s the reason.”

You’ll be able to ascertain whether the date change was worth the anticipation when Mortal Kombat enters another bout next year. In the interim, take a look at our compilation of the finest video game films here.
