One Encounter After Another is currently available for preorder on 4K Blu-ray at Walmart in anticipation of its global theatrical launch this Friday. Walmart briefly accepted preorders for a Limited Edition Steelbook, but it’s either out of stock or Walmart has deactivated the preorder option since the film technically may not have been meant to be available for purchase until tomorrow. Regardless, the Limited Edition Steelbook was initially priced at $44.25, while the standard edition 4K Blu-ray is $37 (and still in stock).

Amazon has not yet commenced preorders, but we will update this article when the Limited Edition Steelbook becomes available for purchase on Amazon.

One Encounter After Another’s 4K Blu-ray releases support HDR10 and two Dolby surround sound formats: Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 7.1. Special features have not yet been disclosed, nor has the official artwork for any of the four versions known so far: Limited Edition Steelbook, standard 4K Blu-ray, 1080p Blu-ray, and DVD. The Steelbook Edition artwork should be unveiled soon, and it wouldn’t be astonishing if the movie poster above ends up being the cover for the standard editions.

Both 4K Blu-ray releases include 1080p discs along with digital copies. The standard Blu-ray version also comes with the digital edition.

One Encounter After Another Versions:

Helmed by Paul Thomas Anderson and featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Chase Infiniti, and Teyana Taylor, One Encounter After Another appears to be a potential frontrunner for significant awards in the coming year. An action-packed thriller mixed with dark humor, the 162-minute film currently holds a score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes’ critic meter. DiCaprio stars as a former revolutionary who is now habitually anxious due to excessive substance use. Bob Ferguson/Pat Calhoun (DiCaprio’s character) must save his daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti) from Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, his arch-nemesis portrayed by Sean Penn.

One Encounter After Another draws inspiration from Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland. The fundamental premise and several plot elements are taken from the book, but One Encounter After Another is not a traditional adaptation. Anderson had previously adapted Pynchon’s 2009 novel Inherent Vice. The 2014 film is acknowledged to be “based on” rather than “inspired by,” as it adheres more closely to the source material. Unfortunately, Inherent Vice is only accessible on Blu-ray, not 4K Blu-ray, but at least it’s quite affordable. Pynchon, one of America’s most renowned living novelists, is notoriously private, so it’s unlikely we’ll discover his thoughts on One Encounter After Another.

Speaking of Pynchon, what a splendid moment for enthusiasts of the former Simpsons voice actor. Not only do Pynchon admirers have a new Paul Thomas Anderson adventure inspired by Vineland to experience, but an upcoming novel from the iconic author is nearly here. Shadow Ticket, Pynchon’s initial novel since 2013’s Bleeding Edge–likely the most “adaptable” Pynchon book remaining–is set to be released on October 7.

Below, we have compiled Paul Thomas Anderson’s films on Blu-ray and 4K (when applicable). If you wish to peruse the source material for One Battle After Another and Inherent Vice, take a look at the subsequent list of Pynchon novels. Both listings are structured in chronological order.

One Battle After Another marks Anderson’s 10th feature film, all of which he has scripted and directed. Except for his directorial debut Hard Eight, Anderson has also produced all of his films. One Battle After Another represents only the third Anderson feature to receive a 4K Blu-ray release. Phantom Thread, the second Anderson film featuring Daniel Day-Lewis, was launched in 4K in 2018. The Adam Sandler film Punch-Drunk Love–one of Sandler’s finest performances–made its 4K debut earlier this year as part of The Criterion Collection.
