Lego’s stylish new 1:1 reproduction of Nintendo’s legendary Game Boy is now available in shops and, if you’ve been following critiques, it has received a very positive response from expert builders up to this point.

Naturally, considering we are somewhat of a skilled builder ourselves *flashes imitation master builder badge*, we have managed to acquire one, and we have been diligently constructing a set that, for the cost of $59.99/£54.99, has offered a great deal of delightful nostalgia.

Indeed, since this particular writer has a penchant for a few adult Lego sets, this charming little gaming treasure has distinctly emerged as one of the more enjoyable builds that the company has released in quite some time. What captures your attention at first is undoubtedly the remarkable attention to detail. Everything you recall is present, appearing far more akin to the original console than we imagined possible with plastic bricks.

The genuine excitement, however, arises from assembling the layers of nostalgia; the Game Boy’s tiny circuit board, those memorable ‘A’ and ‘B’ buttons and so forth, with each crucial element being connected and designed to mimic the actual device in numerous inventive manners: a small rubber Lego piece beneath the D-Pad so it functions and responds as it ought to; the on/off switch is just firm enough; the volume and contrast knobs operate just like we recall, and so on.

Oh, and you must witness these little lenticular screens actually animating. There are various qualities regarding these items, and these are exceptional; the Nintendo Logo, together with the Zelda and Mario Bros. scenes included with the set, are incredibly enjoyable to embed into the ‘screen’ inset for showcasing. They have even succeeded in making the loading of the cartridges feel just right (they click into place very gratifyingly), and the interchangeable screens are simple to remove and replace, allowing us to truly switch them out periodically.

A few other surprises are cleverly hidden throughout the construction — small attentions to detail scattered about — but we won’t spoil everything! Here are some additional images of our completed assembly:

Oh, and in related updates, we have also reported that this set has already been modified to function and play actual games and everything. Next stop, circuit-board-building academy!
