Final Fantasy IX is gearing up to commemorate its 25th anniversary; this remarkable turn-based RPG debuted on the PS1 on 7th July 2000, and leading into 2025, Square Enix has been actively preparing for the occasion with frequent merchandise releases (much to the dismay of this writer and her wallet).

In recent days, the developer has raised the stakes, sharing entirely new illustrations. We have three already, and they are driving fans online into a frenzy.

Let’s begin with the latest creation, which was unveiled overnight. This stunning artwork depicts Zidane, Garnet, and the remainder of the party gazing over the Iifa Tree, a significant spot in the game’s narrative. Illustrated by the game’s character artist Toshiyuki Itahana, the two planets can be seen in the sky along with the Silver Dragon in the background.

Oh, and we cannot overlook Vivi and Steiner at the bottom there. So. Adorable.

Reactions to the artwork have been… less than calm, as one might anticipate. A Final Fantasy IX remake has been speculated for an incredibly long period, and what more opportune moment to disclose it than the game’s 25th anniversary? Especially with this level of promotion.

Certain fans suspect that these art pieces are indeed concept designs for that reimagining. Others just perceive it as a teasing hint for some forthcoming announcement. We’ve even seen mock-ups of box art. Regardless, Final Fantasy IX enthusiasts are getting a bit frantic.

There are two additional breathtaking pieces to admire, anyway. First is a calendar illustration showcasing the central cast on stage aboard the M.S. Prima Vista, the Tantalus’ theatre ship. This one is crafted by Yuya Ishihata, known for producing a plethora of stunning artwork for the Final Fantasy X Magic the Gathering collaboration.

The familiar faces, including Beatrix, are all present, but if you examine the crowd, you can spot members of the Theatre Troupe, the band of thieves that Zidane belongs to; Marcus, Blank, Cinna, Ruby, Baku, along with Benero and Zenero.

Last but certainly not least is yet another artwork from character designer Itahana. This one depicts the game’s main antagonist, Kuja, inside the Iifa Tree, standing by his Silver Dragon.

It presents an oddly serene atmosphere as Kuja gazes out towards the sunlight, either anticipating the party’s arrival toward the conclusion of Disc 2 or perhaps simply there to scheme.

Anyway, it’s possible that even more artwork could emerge in the upcoming week. It’s important to point out that there’s no assurance Square Enix will announce anything come 7th July, so don’t be too let down if that turns out to be the case. The Final Fantasy IX remake remains unofficial, and if it does materialize, it will do so in its own time.

After all, it’s rather enjoyable just to see the game receive such affection manifested in the form of picture book prequels, vinyl releases, and the cutest mug you’ve ever encountered, right?

Do you believe we’ll be hearing about the Final Fantasy IX remake soon? Cast Fira in the comments.
