Bungie is developing a fresh franchise strategy for Destiny following the conclusion of Destiny 2 updates, which includes a “Destiny ‘Legacy'” initiative and what seems to be a brand new installment for the intellectual property. Notably, “upcoming updates” related to a “celebration in Destiny 2” have also been hinted at. The only issue is that there’s no assurance any of this will actually materialize.
In an extensive and highly anticipated blog post, veteran Destiny community manager Dylan Gafner (dmg04) converses with new product lead Josh Deane, who had earlier assured that Bungie is “not finished with Destiny” and revealed the continuing unvaulting operation.
Deane articulates players’ reactions to Destiny 2’s sudden conclusion. “You all didn’t just react angrily; you turned out,” he states. “You recounted your stories about your experiences in Destiny, the significance of the universe to you, and ensured to advocate how catastrophic it would be to abandon this extraordinary realm. It motivated everyone.”
But what precisely is Bungie focused on developing? The unvaulting operation is currently in pre-production, according to Bungie, illustrating a new “progress bar” that extends into early 2028. That’s the soonest we can now anticipate noteworthy alterations to Destiny 2’s content vault.
The unvaulting pre-production phase is predicted to persist until January or February 2027, and “after that point,” it’s estimated to take an additional year “to completely finalize the porting process” for previous content. It’s ambiguous at what pace any content may be unvaulted within the timeframe from early 2027 to early 2028.
The list of unvaulting content is presented in groups by order of importance. The “initial phase” includes:
- Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns
- Strikes from the aforementioned releases
- Raids, and Raid Lairs from the aforementioned releases
- Menagerie Activity with renewed rewards
Moreover, Bungie is considering “stretch goals at the unvaulting launch or following” the initial deployment. This encompasses:
