Mortality. Taxes. GTA 5 moving 5 million copies each quarter. There are certain certainties in life, and the ongoing triumph of Rockstar’s open-world titles is one of them. Even with GTA 6 approaching, both the previous Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption 2 are flying off the shelves.
In its latest financial statement, Take-Two, the publisher, announced that GTA 5 has reached 215 million units sold-in, an increase from 210 in the previous quarterly report. This figure does account for some physical stock held by retailers not yet purchased by consumers, but that’s a minor detail, especially considering Take-Two reported an additional 5 million copies of GTA 5 sold each quarter this year.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is also seeing impressive sales, with 4 million copies sold in the last three months. Referencing the respected industry analyst group Circana, Take-Two claims that RDR2 is the “top-selling title of the past 7 years in the US based on dollar revenue.”
This sales achievement may irritate long-time fans of the game, as Red Dead Online has been largely forgotten by Rockstar despite its success, and the absence of updates continues to stir dissatisfaction within the community.
Content is not lacking for GTA Online, though. During yesterday’s investor Q&A, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick described GTA 5 as the “gold standard of our industry,” a claim difficult to dispute. It’s no surprise that everyone anticipates GTA 6’s sales to be nothing short of phenomenal.
