Star Wars video games have mainly concentrated on action for many years, yet Star Wars: Zero Company deviates from that pattern by immersing players in the battlefields of a single-player tactical game. This genre remains quite popular, aided by titles like XCOM, Gears Tactics, and Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters; however, there is still a perceived barrier to entry in a genre that often inundates its audience with a multitude of gameplay mechanics.

Developer Bit Reactor aims to address this concern with Zero Company, as the studio intends to craft a Star Wars journey that is both accessible and captivating for die-hard fans of tactical games. In a conversation with GameSpot, Bit Reactor’s creative director Greg Foertsch detailed how Zero Company will naturally introduce players to its systems as they venture deeper into the complex world of the Clone Wars.

“When examining these games broadly, many times the mechanics can be overwhelming, with the story added on later. By allowing the story to guide us, it opens doors instead of closing them. And it’s not solely about what we want players to enjoy, but also about the emotions we hope to evoke. Using elements like camera work, presentation, and narrative, I believe we can resonate on multiple levels and truly differentiate this game while innovating beyond the offerings of other titles in this genre. Our goal is to harmoniously combine the immersive experience with the presentation and mechanics.”

“Consequently, we strive to envelop the game in a coherent narrative that resonates with players while teaching them the mechanics as necessary, rather than overwhelming them. If you prefer to experience the story, it’s available. If you want to engage in permadeath gameplay, that’s an option too. We want to design a game that allows players to appreciate and engage without feeling burdened, all while retaining depth and challenge. That’s exactly what we aim to achieve.”

Kelsey Sharpe, creative executive at LucasFilm Games, added that the very fact that Zero Company is rooted in the Star Wars universe allows Bit Reactor to explore tactical elements that other games cannot. “You can wield the Force, summon an astromech droid for assistance, and so much of Star Wars storytelling revolves around the relationships formed among characters,” Sharpe noted.

“While you are familiarizing yourself with the crafted characters, you are also creating your own customizable avatars and making crucial decisions about whom to assign to specific missions together. These choices will significantly impact both the tactical aspects of gameplay and your experience back at the Den.”

Star Wars: Zero Company is set to release in 2026 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. For additional information on the game, feel free to view the reveal trailer and learn how its developers plan to capture the wartime essence of Rogue One and Andor.
