“We’ve enhanced the combat experience significantly”

As part of IGN‘s continuous coverage of The Outer Worlds 2 this month, Xbox studio Obsidian has been conversing with the outlet regarding its FPS gameplay mechanics in the much-anticipated sequel – detailing how the team has endeavored to refine and enhance these mechanics since the initial Outer Worlds installment.
Studio members Rob Donovan and Kyle Koenig initiated their discussion by revealing that the team quickly pinpointed elements they wished to enhance, modernize, and refine from the first game – thereby “adding a lot to the combat experience” for The Outer Worlds 2.
“We’ve greatly improved the combat experience in The Outer Worlds 2. This was an area we identified that could be significantly polished and modernized, incorporating some exciting features that we’ve genuinely enjoyed developing throughout this process.”
The developers then mentioned titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Destiny as inspirations for enhancements to the fundamental gunplay – which is undoubtedly a positive aspect considering these games are leaders in the FPS genre. Despite drawing from these examples, Obsidian emphasizes that this remains distinctly an RPG, with weapon and combat mechanics evolving as players develop their characters in traditional RPG style.
This information and more is presented in the video we’ve attached above, which includes an abundance of Outer Worlds 2 gameplay for your viewing pleasure. Currently, this is Xbox’s major title for Fall 2025 – with Microsoft even allocating a significant segment during its Xbox Summer Showcase this year to discuss the forthcoming Obsidian RPG.
