“Our greatest rivalry isn’t another gaming system”

Following Microsoft’s revelation of Halo: Campaign Evolved making its way to PS5 next year, Xbox executive Matt Booty believes that the platform faces more competition from sources like TikTok than from other gaming systems at present.

In a recent discussion with The New York Times, Booty mentioned that the team is “aiming to connect with individuals where they are” as a key component of its new multiplatform approach. The Xbox executive emphasized that Microsoft’s “primary competition isn’t another console,” instead referring to social media platform TikTok (and films).

“We are all aiming to connect with individuals where they are,

Our primary competition is not another console […] We are increasingly competing with everything from TikTok to films.”

This isn’t the initial instance of hearing this perspective from gaming executives – social media undoubtedly occupies a significant share of attention these days, and such leaders prefer individuals to engage with their games rather than endlessly scroll. Nonetheless, it remains quite a daring assertion, and it partially clarifies Microsoft’s current mindset.

This news follows Xbox’s significant announcement on Friday evening: Halo is going multiplatform with its inaugural PlayStation launch. We asked you all yesterday how you feel about Halo: Campaign Evolved coming to PS5; so feel free to visit there and converse with us about your views on this if you have anything to share!
