By “We’re not done with Wolfenstein yet”

Before MachineGames spent a good few years building Indiana Jones and its recent DLC The Order of Giants, the Swedish developer worked with Bethesda to reboot Wolfenstein – and it sounds as though a third game in their Wolfenstein trilogy could be next on the cards following the release of this month’s Indy DLC.
In a new documentary on all-things MachineGames’ Wolfenstein series, studio head Jerk Gustafsson talked about how the studio has always seen this as a trilogy – with just two games of that trilogy released so far in The New Order and The New Colossus (The Old Blood was a standalone DLC). Here’s where they spoke about wanting to do a third game in that series:
“We have always seen this as a trilogy […] That journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for at least [BJ], what would happen in the second one and what would happen in the third one.
I think that’s important to say, because—at least I hope—we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”
With Gustafsson’s final message there, it’s likely that MachineGames hasn’t quite decided what’s next after Indiana Jones and its DLC – but it certainly seems the will of the team is to do ‘Wolfenstein 3’ at some point. Here’s hoping that comes around quick – we really liked what MachineGames did with wolf, including that standalone DLC.
It’s not a guarantee that this is what’s next for the team, of course. Not only would Microsoft / Bethesda have to greenlight such a project, we’ve also heard that the folks over at Disney want more Indiana Jones following the success of The Great Circle. We’ll just have to wait and see what’s next for MachineGames, then!
