“Kudos on today’s announcement”
If you haven’t noticed yet, Valve has revealed several new devices for 2026 today, including a console-like PC referred to as the “Steam Machine”. Xbox chief Phil Spencer has been sharing his thoughts on the announcement via social media.
Spencer reacted to Valve’s announcement post on Twitter, pointing out that Xbox’s commitment to expanding across PC, console, and handheld devices somewhat corresponds to what Steam is currently pursuing:
“Gaming progresses when gamers and creators have additional methods to play and innovate, particularly across open platforms. Broadening access via PC, console, and handheld devices embodies a future founded on choice—core principles that have steered Xbox’s mission from the beginning. As a prominent publisher on Steam, we embrace diverse avenues for gamers to access titles everywhere. Kudos on today’s announcement.”
As previously noted, the Steam Machine isn’t a console—Valve is eager to emphasize that it functions as a PC intended for the living room or possibly your desktop—but it shares certain characteristics with the Xbox Series X and even Series S. When you factor in the new VR headset, the new controller, and existing products like the Steam Deck, it becomes evident that Valve is striving to offer numerous methods for accessing Steam.
The significant query from our perspective is whether Valve will collaborate with Microsoft to make Steam accessible on the forthcoming Xbox console, which has been a topic of speculation for quite some time. However, with the Steam Machine approaching, it seems Valve is sufficiently occupied concentrating on its own hardware for the moment.
