Talking Point: This Classic Activision Racer Came To Xbox 15 Years Ago, And We Sorely Miss It

Obscured boundaries

A handful of us here at PX HQ are enormous fans of arcade racing – in reality, nearly all of us enjoy racing around imaginative circuits and digital tracks at absurd speeds just for fun. Thus, today, we’re gathered to honor 15 years of one of our absolute favorites within this genre; an Xbox classic. Activision’s 360 racer Blur has now reached a decade and a half of existence, and we truly miss it even now.

Of course, Blur is still available – if you can procure a physical copy and are willing to play it on original 360 hardware. Nevertheless, as we discussed last summer, this Activision racer still lacks backwards compatibility even after all these years – in fact, it isn’t even accessible digitally due to lapsed licenses. We long for it because, to be frank, it would simply be much more convenient and seamless to launch this title on modern Xbox consoles rather than connecting a 360 to dive in.

Moreover, Xbox’s backwards compatibility program frequently offers performance improvements, which Blur could greatly benefit from in this day and age. The game remains enjoyable – yet it operates at 30FPS with somewhat hazy visuals, and we’d be thrilled to see all of that enhanced and freshened up for a smoother experience in 2025. Blur at 4K and 60FPS? We absolutely need it!

Blur also holds some intriguing connections to Xbox history. The development team behind it — Bizarre Creations — collaborated directly with Microsoft for many years, creating the Project Gotham Racing series. Honestly, aside from Blur, PGR might be the arcade racer we yearn to see resurrected in the contemporary landscape. That said, more Blur and/or PGR in any form would be greatly appreciated, Xbox.

No matter what the future holds for titles like Blur and PGR (likely not much, regrettably), we still want to extend our congratulations to the former on reaching a very happy 15 years in the market. This classic Activision racer made its Xbox 360 premiere on May 25th, 2010 in North America – and it continues to occupy our minds more than a decade later.

Do you have cherished memories of Blur, or perhaps other arcade racers from this period? Share your thoughts with us below.
