“A gaming console set to revolutionize digital amusement forever”
- Penned by Ben Kerry
This year, 2025, marks the 20th anniversary of the iconic Xbox 360, which was initially launched in November 2005, marking the start of the seventh generation of gaming consoles. Even to today, the console is still highly appreciated and enjoyably used by many – it impressively highlights that 20 years have exactly passed since Microsoft first introduced this console to the world.
Coincidentally, it was on May 12th, 2005 when Microsoft hosted an exclusive MTV event to premiere the Xbox 360, along with a variety of games scheduled for release in alignment with the console’s debut later that year. We decided to share this presentation above for you to reminisce about that era – but try not to feel too awkward at some of the contents portrayed.
The event showcases everything from lively performances, car customizations a la ‘Pimp my Ride’, questionable talks, and super-outmoded video effects, all culminating in what seems like a gateway to a completely distinct epoch. It’s captivating to revisit and provides an interesting insight into the state of Microsoft and the gaming sector at that moment.
Reflecting on that era, it’s odd to comprehend that the Xbox 360 will be turning twenty years old later this year. Yet, we continue to take pleasure in playing so many of its games on both native hardware and through backward compatibility to this day – it doesn’t seem so distant in memory, owing to the timeless essence of those games!
At any rate, this presentation certainly holds a special commemorative value – not particularly for the event itself, but relatively for the transformative product it brought into the gaming universe. A grander celebration awaits the Xbox 360 come November, but for now, let’s indulge in some MTV recollections, reflecting on a significantly disparate era for Microsoft and Xbox.
Do any of you recall this presentation or this period in general? Feel free to share your thoughts below in the comment section.
