“We aimed way beyond our grasp”

Today the crew crafting Splitgate 2 unveiled sweeping changes to the sequel, conceding the recent release fell short of expectations. Their fix: effectively reboot the title as a work-in-progress beta and reconstruct large chunks of the experience.

Via Twitter, they confessed that enthusiasm drove them to promise more than they could deliver, hurry certain systems, commit “knuckle-headed” errors and—most critically—skimp on polish.

We’ve listened, and we’re on the same page: we shipped before it was ready. We had sky-high dreams for Splitgate 2, and our excitement to get it in your hands made us overcommit. We fast-tracked some features, slipped up in dumb ways, and above all didn’t hand you the sleek, portal-packed chaos you adore.”

So we’re re-entering beta. We’ll go dark until early next year re-forging huge sections so the game again feels like classic Splitgate. Expect a complete progression overhaul, more portal density on every map, clearer monetization, a renewed focus on beloved legacy modes, and further tweaks we’ll detail soon.”

Regrettably, the sweeping overhaul means staffing cuts as the studio “refocuses resources on the rework”. Management calls the layoffs “devastating” and hopes to rehire teammates “when the time is right”.

Additionally, the original Splitgate will lose its dedicated servers next month; the team is investigating ways to enable offline or peer-to-peer play instead.

“To safeguard as many jobs as possible, we’ll be pulling the plug on OG Splitgate’s servers within the month. Keeping them live has cost us hundreds of thousands these past two years—money we must divert to our staff. We know this game means the world to many of you, so we’re exploring offline or peer-to-peer support. When Splitgate 2 returns, it should finally live up to its predecessor’s promise.”

Meanwhile, Splitgate 2 remains online during reconstruction, and Chapter 3 will still arrive with necessary fixes and urgent tweaks. Starting sometime in early 2026, the first fruits of the rebuild should start appearing.

The studio’s final word on social media:

“We’ve endured rough patches and awful missteps, but we’ve grown wiser and are more committed than ever to making Splitgate the best it can be. This franchise has been our lifeblood for a decade, and we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Work awaits, but we’re nowhere near done.”
