By “A genre-bending alternate perspective on the legendary PAC-MAN”
We wouldn’t hold it against you for missing this one, but it should definitely be on your list! Shadow Labyrinth is set to launch on Xbox next week, and it’s a metroidvania Pac-Man title that’s been receiving a lot of accolades prior to its release.
It isn’t explicitly marketed as a metroidvania, however, being referred to as a “2D action platformer and a genre-bending alternative to the legendary PAC-MAN.” In this game, you take on the role of “Swordsman No. 8” on a mission to fight “menacing beasts and evolved horrors” in an extraterrestrial setting, assisted by a hovering yellow orb named “PUCK.”
The evaluations aren’t public yet, but here’s what a few of the previews have stated thus far:

“Whether it’s the smoothness of Puck’s grappling hook and wall climbing paired with Swordsman No. 8’s sheer strength and resilience, or the fact that Pac-Man can transform into a mech that fires lasers from its mouth, everything about this Metroidvania is ridiculously enjoyable. The game showcases something for everyone, as the platforming, combat, and puzzles each shine as distinct and pleasurable experiences.”

“Shadow Labyrinth had me captivated at ‘horror Metroidvania’, but it seems there’s a lot more to this quirky Pac-Man multiverse/Amazon animated series crossover than I anticipated. Debuting one day after Donkey Kong Bananza isn’t optimal, but I believe the buzz around Shadow Labyrinth is going to be far louder than anyone expects.”
It sounds exceedingly promising! Shadow Labyrinth has a release date of July 18th for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and pre-orders are available on the Xbox Store starting at the affordable price of just £24.99 / $29.99.
