Seven Games Tested On ROG Xbox Ally X In 45 Minutes Of Impressive Pre-Release Footage

As the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X debuting next week (!), it’s no surprise that we’re beginning to observe some initial footage of the Ally X in action, allowing us to gauge its true capabilities!

The video shared below comes from YouTuber Dans ta grosse poche, who was fortunate to obtain their ROG Xbox Ally X handheld ahead of schedule due to a shipping mishap. They took the initiative to record gameplay of seven titles on the device: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Street Fighter 6, Gears of War: Reloaded, Elden Ring, Elden Ring Nightreign, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Hollow Knight: Silksong.

They clarify that the purpose of this 45-minute video isn’t to deliver a comprehensive analysis of each game’s performance, but to present a general overview of their experiences with the games thus far. In simpler terms, they haven’t made extensive adjustments to elements like graphics, resolution, or upscaling, meaning the metrics we’re observing might not accurately reflect the kind of gameplay you’ll experience on your own device.

“The intention [with this video] is really to provide a somewhat mainstream, broadly general perspective.”

In the footage, we observe that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 operates anywhere between 30FPS to 60FPS depending on the power consumption being utilized, and it appears the graphics settings are primarily at default – likely hovering around medium to high. They also indicate that they won’t settle for anything below 1080p, avoiding 720p or 900p altogether.

Street Fighter 6 is characterized as an outstanding experience on the ROG Xbox Ally X, effortlessly achieving 60FPS at higher wattages and remaining around 50-60FPS when slightly reducing the power.

Gears of War: Reloaded, which has already been showcased leading up to its launch, seems to be another perfect match for the device, and it appears that utilizing maximum wattages isn’t necessary to maintain a smooth 60FPS.

In Elden Ring and Elden Ring Nightreign, they seem to be getting a 30FPS+ rate for the most part, although that’s with the quality settings configured to “High”. The temperature appears to rise significantly on the “High” setting to around 75°C, but then drops substantially to 60°C when testing the “Low” preset briefly (and the FPS clearly increases).

Monster Hunter Wilds seems to function at approximately 30-40FPS by default with a “tailored” graphics preset (presumably around medium to high again), yet this is where the power of AMD FSR shines, as the game leaps to over 60FPS when the frame generation toggle is switched on. They describe this as a “much more gratifying” experience.

And what about Hollow Knight: Silksong? Well, that’s simply astonishing. In their evaluations, the YouTuber displays the game reaching over 300FPS in some scenarios, and even on the lowest power setting, it achieves 60FPS effortlessly (with a temperature of just 46°C).

Here’s a glimpse of their summary of the initial experience:

“There are titles where this Xbox Ally X performs superbly… once you slightly tweak [the settings], you’ll obtain something that’s extremely, extremely pleasing.”

As previously stated, we recommend not putting too much weight on these preliminary impressions until outlets like Digital Foundry and other analysts get a chance to explore the Ally X – we need much more in-depth information regarding how games perform under varying settings, wattages, resolutions, etc.

What we are observing suggests that numerous titles will comfortably operate at 60FPS on the ROG Xbox Ally X, while others may benefit from frame generation and/or simply adjusting the settings to provide a smoother experience than 30FPS if desired. That’s the advantage of having a gaming PC right in your hands!

We hope to share a lot more regarding the ROG Xbox Ally in the upcoming days.
