By “I learned more recently that the proposals are being considered”
There has been extensive discussion regarding Banjo-Kazooie without any actually coming to fruition over the past few years, but a fresh rumour indicates that Xbox and Rare are at least “considering” proposals about a new title.
This information comes from Video Games Chronicle’s Andy Robinson, who stated on a VGC podcast that he has heard Toys for Bob (Crash Bandicoot 4, Spyro Reignited Trilogy) and Moon Studios (Ori) might be keen on developing a Banjo game.
“The conversation for quite some time was that, you know, there’s always outside curiosity regarding Banjo but they’re not open to it. I mean, Gregg (Mayles, Banjo-Kazooie creator) is a person who doesn’t often revisit the past, as he has famously stated on the record, he prefers to create novel ideas. The sentiment from the studio leaders was constantly, “no no no, we are going to pursue something new.”
“I learned more recently that the proposals are being considered. I continually hear the name that comes up is Toys for Bob, who are very eager to work on one. Interestingly, I’ve also heard that Moon Studios is another team that’s very interested.”
“There’s perpetual discussion about the potential for a cartoon or movie. You know, it’s constant.”
Concerning Toys for Bob, the studio has indeed hinted at interest in creating a Banjo-Kazooie game previously, stating in April that “Banjo’s been dormant long enough” and the studio could “have quite a bit of fun” with the initiative.
Meanwhile, Moon Studios hasn’t made any public declarations of interest; however, the company’s CEO implied earlier this year that Xbox could “compete with 3D Mario” with a well-crafted Banjo-Kazooie game.
Will it come to pass? Who can say at this moment. Xbox chief Phil Spencer is aware of our desire – he informed fans in December 2023 that he “hears” their calls for a new Banjo game, so let’s hope that something materializes with it eventually.
