Rumour: Halo 1 Remake/Remaster Started Development In 2023, May Not Include Multiplayer

Anticipated to be launched next year

During the summer of 2024, it was disclosed by The Verge’s Tom Warren that Halo Studios was engaged in “some sort of remaster” for Halo: Combat Evolved, which might also launch on PlayStation.

We haven’t truly received much news since then, although Xbox chief Phil Spencer seemed to hint at a Halo venture for 2026 during the Xbox Games Showcase a few weeks ago, leading many to believe it’s the Halo 1 remaster.

This week, YouTuber and dedicated Halo enthusiast Rebs Gaming has revealed a fresh rumour regarding this endeavor based on “two sources linked to Halo developers.” Rebs consistently refers to it as a “remake” instead of a “remaster,” and the indication is that development commenced in 2023 and it will probably launch in 2026 as anticipated.

There’s also a note that it may solely be a campaign release—implying multiplayer might be excluded.

“Both [sources] indicate the Combat Evolved remake is slated for 2026, and have not received any word regarding multiplayer, suggesting it could be campaign-only. One fact I can affirm is that there weren’t any Halo projects besides Infinite and Project Tatanka that were under development prior to 2023. This knowledge comes from a previous Halo Infinite campaign developer, and one of my informants for the Combat Evolved remake data states that development started in 2023.”

It’s always wise to approach information like this with skepticism, particularly considering that projects in development can be altered frequently, yet it certainly seems like something significant is on the horizon for the Halo franchise in 2026.

We should hopefully learn a great deal more very soon, as Halo Studios has hinted at least one significant reveal planned for the Halo World Championships in October, so stay tuned for further updates on that.

The remainder of the video is worth a look if you’re intrigued, where Rebs also discusses a scrapped Halo Infinite battle royale mode possibly being revived as a new multiplayer venture, alongside a suggestion that Halo 7 could be in pre-production. We’ll link it down below.
