The Xbox racer is currently on pause

Last night, we tuned into Sony’s State of Play event to discover which Xbox-related disclosures would appear, as one does. Thankfully, there were several pertinent reveals, but one of the most captivating trailers of the night was for a fresh Gran Turismo 7 extension. GT7 Power Pack incorporates a variety of exciting features like endurance racing, complete race weekends, numerous new events, and more – and it left us feeling a tad melancholy about Forza Motorsport‘s unexpected departure.

Alright, that last part might be somewhat of an overstatement — Phil Spencer mentions that the game is just on hold — but it’s simply unfortunate that 2023’s FM installment couldn’t savor a slightly extended lifespan on Xbox and PC. Here we find ourselves in 2025, with the PlayStation counterpart receiving a major expansion and a significant free update as well – while Xbox’s simulation racer faded into obscurity this year following a fantastic anniversary content drop. Forza Motorsport deserved more.

Part of FM deserving more stems from the fact that the framework of Xbox’s 2023 racer is actually impressive. As highlighted in our review from two years ago now, Forza Motorsport was always a remarkable racer, it just required some additional TLC to fully accelerate. To be honest, one could assert that a similar scenario occurred with GT7 at launch – but Sony has consistently demonstrated exceptional support for its 2022 racer, while Xbox has virtually shuttered a game that debuted almost two years later. It’s truly a pity.

We appreciate that Turn 10 managed to at least conclude with a flourish with that anniversary update; reviving the series’ iconic Fujimi Kaido track from FM4. It served as an excellent showcase for what Forza Motorsport could evolve into once everything aligned, but it could have marked the beginning of something rather than what resembles a final chapter. Xbox’s choice to reboot the series in this generation led us to believe that the game would endure for some time, but as of now, that’s not the reality.

Nevertheless, we have Forza Horizon 6 to anticipate, which is of course a pleasant silver lining – but it doesn’t alter the fact that Forza Motorsport warranted a bit more focus, in our perspective. I personally haven’t hesitated in confessing that I frequently indulge in Gran Turismo 7 on my PS5 (heresy, I know), and to witness it receive further updates alongside its inaugural premium expansion is genuinely splendid, even if FM is not enjoying the same. Here’s hoping the Xbox series returns with a bang at some future point.
