Welcome to ‘Horror 2.0’
- by Ben Kerry
Late last year, after multiple lengthy delays, spooky ghost-hunting hit Phasmophobia finally came to consoles – selling three million copies in the process. Since then, developer Kinetic Games has updated the game on Xbox, but not in the same way as it has planned for 2026. The team is plotting a complete overhaul next year as part of its ‘Horror 2.0’ update.
At the time of posting, we’re not sure exactly when this update will drop; the developer says it’s coming “as soon as it’s ready”. However, we do know some of the lofty goals that the studio has for its Phasmophobia Horror 2.0 Update, including “reworking the entire horror in the game”.
“We’re basically going to be reworking the entire horror in the game […] I can’t reveal too much because when we release the update, we’re just going to tell everyone there’s a new update, go and play,
We’re not going to do too many patch notes. We just want people to go in […] Almost like they’re playing a new game,”
Audio is one thing that’s always important in horror games, especially something like the experience you get with Phasmophobia. As you’d expect, then, that’s a key element of this big 2026 overhaul – Kinetic Games is doing “a lot of audio rework” alongside the other new features coming in its Horror 2.0 update.
“There’s going to be so much there, not just new things; we’re changing a lot. One of the biggest things we’re doing is a lot of audio rework. There’s a lot of little audio changes we want to do. I can’t reveal too much about it. We want people to, once that update comes out, feel like they’re playing a new game.”
All of this new information comes from an extensive Eurogamer interview held with creator Daniel Knight, which is well worth a read if you’re interested in how this horror mega-hit came to be. Otherwise, be ready for a massive Phasmophobia update to come to Xbox consoles sometime in 2026, and hopefully we learn more about Horror 2.0 in the meantime.
