Greetings to ‘Horror 2.0’
- by Ben Kerry
Last year, following several prolonged delays, eerie ghost-hunting arrived at Phasmophobia, ultimately achieving three million sales during that time. Since that moment, developer Kinetic Games has made enhancements to the game on Xbox, though not in the manner intended for 2026. The team is planning a complete revamp next year as part of its ‘Horror 2.0’ update.
At the moment of publishing, it’s unclear precisely when this update will launch; the developer indicates it’s coming “as soon as it’s prepared”. Nevertheless, we are aware of some ambitious objectives that the studio has set for its Phasmophobia Horror 2.0 Update, such as “revamping the entire horror aspect of the game”.
“We are essentially going to overhaul the entire horror within the game […] I can’t disclose too much because when we launch the update, we’ll simply inform everyone there’s a new update, go and try it out,
We won’t provide extensive patch notes. Our goal is for players to dive in […] Almost as if they are experiencing a new game,”
Sound is one aspect that is always crucial in horror games, particularly for a title like Phasmophobia. As you might anticipate, therefore, that’s a pivotal component of this extensive 2026 revamp – Kinetic Games is undertaking “considerable audio reworking” alongside the additional features arriving with its Horror 2.0 update.
“There will be an abundance of content, not just fresh elements; we are altering a lot. One of the primary changes involves substantial audio reworking. There are numerous small audio modifications we aim to incorporate. I can’t reveal too much about it. We want players, once the update is released, to feel as though they are engaging with a brand new game.”
All these insights stem from an in-depth Eurogamer interview conducted with creator Daniel Knight, which is certainly worth perusing if you’re intrigued by how this horror phenomenon came to fruition. Otherwise, be prepared for a significant Phasmophobia update to arrive on Xbox consoles sometime in 2026, and we hope to gather more information about Horror 2.0 in due course.
