Another face-off year?
- by Ben Kerry
Yesterday, we discussed the significant Xbox ‘Magnus’ leak and its possible implications for Microsoft’s next-generation console – and while some of that information admittedly exceeds our comprehension, the suggested release timeframe is something we can entirely grasp. Yes, that leak once more indicates that the upcoming Xbox is expected to launch in 2027, and now a new rumour circulating states that Sony’s PS6 might follow suit.
As reported by Insider Gaming, the alleged source ‘KeplerL2’ took to NeoGAF to assert that Sony’s “strategy” is to launch PS6 in 2027, assuming “no unforeseen delays”. The insider was replying to numerous inquiries concerning yesterday’s video on AMD’s partnership that provided extensive insights into PlayStation’s upcoming strategies. We’ll include the exact forum exchange below:
Nial: “That’s just wording, I literally noticed individuals stating the exact opposite. 2027 is plausible.”
KeplerL2: “Not merely plausible, it’s the strategy unless any unforeseen setbacks occur.”
Curiously, one of KeplerL2’s additional replies was directly linked to Magnus, with the insider stating that the forthcoming Xbox will “certainly” receive the updates discussed by Sony and AMD in this recent video. This is a topic we covered on the site yesterday – we’ll provide a link to that below; it includes some intriguing remarks from the AMD head regarding how everyone will benefit from the company’s developments related to PS6.
Returning to our analysis of the Magnus leak for a moment – while it seems that the proposed launch year could spark some rivalry between Sony and Microsoft, the devices themselves may not align as closely as past generations. Indeed, the leak suggests that Microsoft’s system “will be significantly more than a console” and will “compete with the PC gaming sector at least somewhat directly”. It is anticipated that PS6 will be a far more conventional console in contrast, although this is all speculation and should be perceived as such.
It’s also pertinent to mention that the PS5-in-2027 rumour originates from someone who previously commented on Xbox’s first-party handheld, which was challenged by Windows Central’s Jez Corden, thus it’s always wise to take rumours with caution. Regardless, we could find ourselves in quite an intriguing scenario in roughly two years, and we’re very eager to see how it all unfolds. While the characteristics of the two systems may not correspond directly, 2027 could very well be the year for both, and you can be assured that we’ll be present for it.
