Microsoft Reportedly Still Has Plans To Make Its Own Xbox Handheld

After postponing it to create ROG Xbox Ally

This afternoon, we presented a major report from Windows Central that outlines much of what Microsoft is developing for the upcoming iteration of Xbox – and within that report, we discovered a small detail that suggests Team Green still intends to create its own portable console at some point.

Indeed, in the report, journalist Jez Corden discusses ROG Xbox Ally and its potential effects on Microsoft’s forthcoming home console. While Corden reminds us that Xbox recently set aside its first-party handheld aspirations to concentrate on collaborating with Asus, the journalist proceeded to indicate that this may just be a temporary decision by Microsoft.

Here’s where Corden offered his insights:

“Microsoft opted to set aside its own Xbox handheld initiatives and partner with ASUS to release the Xbox Ally this year to begin collecting input on the experience that will fundamentally drive its next generation of ‘console’ technology. I’ve been informed that Microsoft still intends to develop its own Xbox handheld eventually, in alignment with this new strategy.”

This is quite intriguing information, especially considering that just a week ago, Xbox president Sarah Bond elaborated on why the team chose to abandon its internal handheld console to focus on ROG Xbox Ally. The new report appears to imply that this first-party handheld would emerge sometime after Microsoft’s next home console at this juncture, though it doesn’t specifically address the timeline for any of this.

We would also be interested to see how a well-designed Xbox-developed handheld would manage backwards compatibility – especially since the comprehensive report claims that our existing libraries will function with the new home console, unlike the manner in which ROG Xbox Ally operates. We’ll need to wait and see, we suppose – and in the meantime, feel free to explore that substantial next-gen report below.
