Lots Of Xbox Games Have Quietly Received New 1000G Achievements

This time last year, we brought you a story about how easy 1000G achievements had been suddenly added to 60+ Xbox games, and the exact same thing has happened again this year – but this time it affects over 100 Xbox games.

Credit goes to True Achievements for the discovery on this, and they’ve also got a big list of the 100+ games that have added these achievements – many of which are three versions of the same thing across multiple platforms.

Now, if we look into one of these games more closely, we can see how easy these achievements are. Fall Asleep, for example, has added achievements such as killing 10 enemies, falling into lava and breaking 20 boxes for 200G each. If you own all three versions of the game, there’s a potential 3000G on offer based on this latest free update.

The reason this is happening, as we mentioned last year, is that developers and publishers are allowed to add achievements to their games equating to 1000G on a “semi-annual” basis (which runs from January-June and then July-December). This obviously makes them more attractive to achievement hunters, but also irritates those who feel the system is being exploited just for the purpose of adding in pointless achievements.

For what it’s worth, here’s a bit of what Microsoft says about this:

“Titles are permitted to add achievements or gamerscore at any time after launch, with or without corresponding new content, but they cannot exceed title-based or calendar-based limits.

A single achievement cannot exceed 200 gamerscore and all achievements in the title must be achievable. Unlocking achievements in the base game or a content update must represent a thorough exploration of or engagement with game content.”

There are multiple schools of thought about whether this is a good idea or not, but one request that seems to be coming up fairly often is addressing “triple-stack” achievements – the ability to get extra gamerscore from titles that have three identical versions.

With Microsoft putting a much bigger focus on Xbox Play Anywhere these days, it feels a little redundant for so many of these titles to have Xbox console and PC variants when they could be included as part of the Play Anywhere program, so it’ll be interesting to see if Microsoft tries to mandate this in the months and years ahead.
