‘Huge’ Number Of People Cancelling DOOM Pre-Orders Over ‘Botched Physical Release’

Negative reactions to the disc edition

At the end of last week, we discussed how DOOM: The Dark Ages’ physical edition seemed to contain minimal content on the disc, which has apparently caused a “significant” number of players to cancel their boxed pre-orders.

This information comes from the game preservation-oriented Twitter account “Does it play?“, and many disheartened DOOM enthusiasts have responded to confirm their cancellation of physical copies since the news broke.

For those who may not be aware, DOOM: The Dark Ages has only a few megabytes of data on the disc, meaning the entire game must be downloaded to play it. This effectively renders the disc nearly pointless.

We completely empathize with the frustration surrounding this, but we also wonder if it will influence future events. How many individuals are considered a “significant” number at this stage? If it’s enough, then Microsoft might take notice, but probably it pales in comparison to the digital appetite across various platforms.

We hope we’re mistaken! It would be fantastic to see titles like Gears of War: Reloaded, Fable, The Outer Worlds 2, and many other titles released in quality disc formats (if Baldur’s Gate 3 achieved it, any game can too). Perhaps… just maybe… the voices of those unhappy with this decision will influence future Xbox first-party launches.
