Hollow Knight: Silksong Has No Reviews Yet, So Here’s What The Players Are Saying

Right, we’ve already seen all the hubbub about Hollow Knight: Silksong breaking various storefronts including the Xbox Store today, so clearly this game is massively in demand – which makes it strange to see no reviews at launch.

The reason for this is apparently because Team Cherry (the studio that developed it) wanted to honour their Kickstarter backers and other players, as well as reduce their workload, by not distributing review codes ahead of time.

So, with no professional reviews available for Hollow Knight: Silksong as things stand, we’re going to look to the players themselves for some early impressions – and we’re talking seriously early impressions considering it’s only been out for a few hours at the time of writing.

The good news is that it’s off to a great start, with an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam and plenty of positive thoughts on social media. There are a lot of user reviews on the Xbox Store too, but they’re mostly pretty messy and don’t contain much useful feedback, so we’ll stick to Steam and social media for these early impressions.

Here’s just a sample of what we’ve come across on Twitter so far:

And here are some of the more detailed reviews from its Steam page:

Savno on Steam: “Absolutely perfect, it feels so refreshing to play this game with all the new mechanics. Plus the graphics are beautiful and shows how much effort Team Cherry put in over the years. PS: I’m even more into the game and wow. It is genuinely satisfying to play this game and it’s just so fun. I get why Team Cherry had fun developing this game because honestly it is crazy.”

Desertdweller on Steam: “My first couple hours in have been great! A lot of interesting changes from the first game, a lot of which I’m still getting used to. The biggest impact I’ve felt so far is the removal of the down slash/pogo, and replacing it with a diagonal diving ability. It felt weird at first, but as I’ve been using it, I’m seeing its potential for really cool combos with other abilities.

There are some newer features that I didn’t expect, such as a quest/objective system which can help steer people who want a goal into a direction, which was often a complaint of the previous game and metroidvanias in general. They don’t seem to be a requirement, so freedom of exploration is still a big part of the game.

The game is even more beautiful than the last, and with great music as expected. So many details have been crammed into every environment so far, and it’s pretty clear why this game took so long to develop.”

Foxy Knox on Steam: “The wait was so worth it. This game is everything I expect and more. Gorgeous environment, really smooth animations, great soundtrack, fun combat, everything you need, and all for 20€. Team Cherry cooked!”

So, it seems like the feedback is almost unanimously positive for Hollow Knight: Silksong at this early stage, although we’re going to have to wait to see how it fares in the long run – many players have struggled to even access it yet!
