“We require this additional time”
It’s now official! Rockstar Games has announced that GTA 6 is postponed until May 2026, with the team emphasizing that additional time is crucial to “surpass” the expectations of the GTA community.
GTA 6 is now scheduled for release on Xbox on May 26th, 2026 for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
“We sincerely apologize for this delay. The enthusiasm and anticipation surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto have been genuinely heartwarming for our whole team. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we finalize the game.
With every title we’ve launched, our aim has always been to go beyond your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We hope you comprehend that we require this further time to achieve the level of excellence you, our fans, expect and deserve.”
This clearly opens up the Fall 2025 timeframe for other publishers who were hesitant to compete against GTA 6, so we could see increased activity in the upcoming months. Sadly, Fable has already been pushed to 2026, so it will be intriguing to observe how Xbox manages its releases next year—definitely not in May!
It’s a bit disheartening to realize we’ll have to wait another 12 months for GTA 6, but after 13 years, another year is manageable. Here’s hoping for another trailer soon.
